Students need to know there are three types of measurement: length, weight, and capacity. Metric units are used to measure length, weight, and capacity in the metric system. Customary units are used to measure length, weight, and capacity in the US customary system.

What is a measurement?

A measurement is a number that tells us how much of something there is. For example, if we measure the length of a table, we might say it is two meters long. This means that the table is two times as long as a meter.

Some common measurement tools include rulers, tape measures, scales, and thermometers.
